Why it matters to hosts If your customers are hosted in or rely on backbone capacity in concentrated facilities, you have no redundancy against a single point of failure—and no control over the operators maintaining it. This outage was not a software problem or a hosting decision; it was cooling equipment in someone else's building.

What to do Audit which of your critical infrastructure (DNS, mail, billing) depends on single data center locations or shared chiller systems, and identify whether you have failover capacity in a geographically independent facility.

My view The hosting industry has scaled rapidly by consolidating into mega-facilities, but we've created a fragility problem we haven't solved. The outage lasted hours because three separate providers all had to wait for one facility's recovery plan—none of them owned the cooling system. This is a reminder that hosting resilience isn't just about redundancy; it's about independence. Smaller providers who maintain presence across diverse locations have an underrated advantage right now.
